Give Hope: Donate Your Stuff

This holiday season, many of us will be fortunate to receive new clothes, gadgets, and household items. But what happens to all the old items that your new gifts will replace?

Consider adopting the ‘one-in, one-out’ philosophy. For every new item you receive, give away the old item you’re replacing. In addition to being a great method for decluttering your house, it’s also a fantastic way to donate your used goods to those in need.

What Can You Donate?

Clothes

If you get new clothes, your older items will now sit in the back of the closet. Consider freeing up space by donating your old articles of clothing. Last year’s Christmas sweater could be the protection your neighbor needs against the winter cold.

Toys

Pack up the old toys that are sitting in the toy chest, you know the ones I’m talking about, and donate them to Volunteers of America Ohio & Indiana. Consider asking your child to participate in the donating process. Talk to them about how families we serve will appreciate their gift and how much joy it will bring to those in need.

Shoes

When you get new shoes or boots, you might think about throwing your last pair away. However, if they’re in fair condition and don’t have major damage (such as holes or tears), you can donate them to help the less fortunate during the holidays.

Winter Outerwear

After getting a new winter wardrobe, it’s easy to pack up your old winter clothes and store them away in some dark place to be forgotten. Rather than collecting dust, your old jackets could be warming up those in need.

Appliances

If you get a new household appliance, such as a toaster, blender, iron, or microwave, don’t throw away your old one if it’s still working. There are plenty of people in social recovery programs attempting to get back on their feet. Household items you no longer need could help them furnish their new apartment.
