Giving and Receiving: How Donating Old Items Replaced by New Gifts Can Help Others
This holiday season, many of us are lucky enough to receive new clothes, gadgets, and household items. But what happens to all of the old items that your new gifts are replacing?
Consider adopting the ‘one-in, one-out’ philosophy. For every new item you receive, give away the old item that’s being replaced. Not only is this a great method to declutter your home but it’s also a fantastic way to donate your used goods to those in need.
What Can You Donate?
Clothes
To make room for the new clothes you receive, consider freeing up some closet or drawer space by donating your gently used items. Those jeans you’re tired of wearing could be someone’s new budget friendly great find.
Toys
Kids love anything new and shiny. Pack up the old toys that are sitting around in your homeand donate them to Volunteers of America Ohio & Indiana. Better yet, include your child in the donating process and let them know just how much the families we serve will appreciate their gift.
Shoes
When you get new shoes or boots, you might think about throwing your last pair away. However, if they’re in gently used condition and don’t have major damage (such as holes or tears), you can donate them to help the less fortunate during the holidays.
Winter Outerwear
If you or your children have outgrown their old winter coats, hats or gloves, we’ll gladly take them off your hands! Rather than collecting dust in a pile in your closet, your old jackets could be warming up those in need.
Appliances
If you get a new household appliance, such as a toaster, blender, iron, or microwave, don’t throw away your old one if it’s still working. There are plenty of people in our social recovery programs attempting to get back on their feet could use them to furnish their new apartments.
Vehicles
How often do you see a vehicle sitting on the side of the road for weeks with the words ‘for sale’ painted on the windows? How many friends do you have who are hanging onto an old vehicle that they keep intending to fix up, but never have the time? While these vehicles are just sitting around collecting rust, they could be helping fund our social programs, supportive housing, and community services via our car donation program.
