Child Homelessness is on the Rise

How your Dayton car donation can help fund educational programs

America’s public education system is designed to give our children the skills they need to build the foundation for a successful future. While this system is intended to give every child an equal opportunity to learn, children who live in unstable or unfit living conditions face a major disadvantage. Constantly moving between living situations can make it difficult to attend school on a regular basis, study for tests, and concentrate on homework.

The troubling thing is, the population of homeless children is only growing.

The problem is getting worse

Despite the fact that the United States in one of the richest nations in the world, our country has the second-highest population of poor children among first-world countries.

According to a report released by The Department of Education, the number of homeless kids rose by 8 percent between the 2011-12 and 2012-13 school years. That’s 1.3 million homeless children that are enrolled at our schools.

Children across the country are living in hotels, motels or doubling up with other family members, hoping that a permanent living situation will come along.

What’s more, these statistics don’t include homeless infants, toddlers, kids who haven’t enrolled in school and runaways. That means that as devastating as these numbers are, the hard truth is that they’re probably much worse.

We need your help to assist these children. The Homeless Children and Youth Act, along with our affordable housing programs are a great first step. But, in order to fund and support more programs like this, we depend on your donations.

That’s why Volunteers of America of Greater Ohio is taking vehicle donations in Dayton, Ohio. We’ll accept almost any vehicle, from cars and motorcycles to tractors and ATVs.
