Dayton car donation helps after-school programs

Learn why donating your car is the best way to help Dayton area kids this holiday season.

According to a report from the National Center for Homeless Education, public schools across the U.S. enrolled more than 1.3 million homeless children and youth during the 2013-14 school year. This represents an 8% increase over the 2012-13 school year, and a 100% increase since 2006-07. It's also an all-time high.

Schools and after-school programs provide comfort, safety and stability to children whose daily lives are anything but predictable. We are committed to helping homeless children receive educational opportunities that will help them escape the cycle of poverty.

Through our Youth Education Center, we offer after-school and summer enrichment programs for children in our housing programs. The Youth Education Center offers a safe space for homeless youth to go after school, and while there, work on their academic progress, social skills and future goals. Services we provide include homework help and tutoring, career exploration, computer skills, healthy meals, art education and programs that encourage children to better understand and communicate their emotions.

As you plan out your holiday gift list this season, consider donating a car to VOAGO. A car donation directly supports Youth Education Center programming and goes a long way toward making kids feel safe and secure.

Here are a few ways that homelessness impacts children:

  1. Health: Homeless children are twice as likely to be sick than other children, suffering from ear infections and stomach problems.
  2. Hunger: Homeless children are twice as likely to be hungry than children not experiencing homelessness.
  3. Learning: Children who are homeless are more likely to repeat a grade in school.
  4. Mental health: Half of school-age homeless children experience anxiety, depression or withdrawal (compared with 18% of non-homeless children).

By donating your car, you can help create a brighter future for a child in need. Do you have a vehicle that has been sitting idly in your garage, driveway or in a storage facility? How about a boat, RV, tractor, or motorcycle (practically anything with a motor)?

We'll arrange free same-day towing, and what's more, you might even end up making more off of your vehicle as a tax-deductible donation than you would from selling it privately.

And — best of all — your donations will help homeless children and their families have a happier holiday in all of the Ohio communities we serve.
