Did you know that charitable giving is good for you? Yes. It’s true! And it’s far more than just the total sense of satisfaction that helping others leaves you with. As it happens, there are plenty of health benefits involved with philanthropic efforts. Trust us. We know a thing or two about helping. For over 121 years, Volunteers of America of Greater Ohio has been helping people in Ohio. Here are just a few ways that helping others helps you in return.
Goodbye Stress
Stress is bad. Everybody knows that. But beyond the fact that it’s simply no fun, it’s also wildly unhealthy. It can raise blood pressure and lead to cardiovascular issues. Stress can also cause physical discomfort such as neck and back pain, and furthermore can lead to sleepless nights and lots of mental stirring. Astudy at the University of California at Berkley found that people who participated in charitable giving had less stress, and by extension, lower blood pressure.
Hello Mental Health
Giving makes you happy. Knowing that you’ve made an effort in improving someone’s life gives one a sense of purpose and satisfaction. That acknowledgment of contribution lends itself to a feeling of self-worth, which goes a long way in easing depression and improving your own quality of life.
Live Better. Live Longer.
Some studies have found links between charitable giving and a longer life span. Giving represents a certain amount of selflessness that diminishes stress (which, as we’ve established, has many adverse health effects). Plus, philanthropy tends to increase one’s social interactions. Both of these factors are linked with contentment and longevity.
