New Mobile App Helping Veterans
Cleveland charity for veterans taking donations to fund valuable programs
It can be a difficult struggle for veterans who return home after years of serving in the military to readjust to everyday society. Socializing, looking for work and dealing with memories of war aren’t minor inconveniences—they’re major obstacles that can keep these heroes from living a normal life.
Because of this, it’s not uncommon for veterans to develop mental disorders, along with feelings of isolation and depression.
If fact, of all the veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan, at least 30 percent suffer from some form of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. What’s more, this number was based only on the number of veterans who were treated at VA hospitals and health centers. The real number could potentially be much higher.
The smartphone app designed to help
Enter Position Report (or POS REP), a company co-founded by Marine veteran Jacob Wood. After one of Wood’s squadmates tragically committed suicide, Wood discovered that there were several other Marines living nearby that may have been able to help his friend deal with his struggles, had they been able to communicate with each other.
Wood decided to take action, and has helped develop a smartphone app that lets veterans to locate and communicate with each other. The app, also called POS REP, is designed to create a proximity-based social network that helps veterans by allowing them to contact and support each other during difficult times.
Along with creating an informal network of veteran friends, the app also lists nearby health care and emergency centers should a veteran require mental or physical help.
While the app is currently available for the iPhone, the company is also working on creating a crowdfunding campaign to raise enough money to develop the app for Android phones, along with expanding functionality of the app into more cities.
