New Veterans and Families First Programs Open in Cleveland and Dayton

In 2010, President Obama and the Department of Veteran’s Affairs announced an effort to eliminate veteran homelessness by 2015 known as the Ending Veteran Homelessness initiative.
There has been notable progress, but as the deadline approaches and more and more veterans return home from overseas, efforts are still proving to be difficult.
However, there is some good news. In October of last year, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown announced that Ohio would receive a $3 million dollar federal boost in order to help eliminate veteran homelessness. This money would be used to fund workforce training, rental vouchers and transportation, all aimed at helping keep at-risk veterans off the streets.
Now, we’re proud to announce that our new Veterans & Families FIRST centers have opened in Cleveland and Dayton, Ohio.
What is Veterans & Families FIRST?
Veterans & Families FIRST (VFF) is a program designed to help low income, at-risk, and homeless veterans find stable housing and health care for themselves and their families. We also offer services such as:
- Transportation
- Legal aid
- Child care
- Financial planning assistance
- Daily living needs
- Financial aid
These services are designed to help veterans stay off the streets and provide them with a stable and secure future. In order to qualify, one must be a veteran, or live in a household headed by a veteran. The veteran’s method of discharge must not have been dishonorable, and they must have an income that is less than 50% of the area’s median.

While we’re happy to announce our VFF centers as our newest method of battling veteran homelessness, the fight is far from over. There is much more work to be done, and we depend on your kindness and donations to support and expand our veteran-specific services such as shelter, affordable housing and support programs.
That’s why, if you have an extra or unused vehicle you know you’ll never use again, we ask you to donate it to Volunteers of America. We can arrange free same-day towing to pick it up, and we’ll take anything with a motor, including cars, trucks, RVs, tractors and boats. You may even earn more money from your vehicle as a tax-deductible donation than it would if you sold it privately.
Remember, your donation will directly fund the programs that can help change the lives of homeless veterans in all of the Ohio communities we serve.
