Why Ohio lawmakers are meeting to help homeless veterans
In January, The Columbus Dispatch reported that state lawmakers are meeting to ensure that military veterans who received a less than honorable discharge will not face extra hardships when they return home. According to the article, these veterans (about 15 percent) can lose out on medical services offered through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. They may also find themselves homeless.
In 2015, the Coalition on Homelessness and Housing of Ohio reported 1,183 homeless veterans in the state, with 129 living in Franklin County. In fact, the majority of Columbus' homeless have served our country in the armed forces.
