Here are a few of their stories:
Brenton
Brenton enlisted in the U.S. Army shortly after high school. After serving four years in Iraq, the young man came home forever changed. Brenton found himself in a deep depression, and after the furnace in his home broke, he found himself without a place to stay. Brenton moved to Volunteers of America's Veterans Resource Center where he was treated for post-traumatic stress disorder. Now Brenton is living in his own home and attending college.
Teresa
Teresa joined the military as a young woman at her father's urging. While working on computer mainframes while stationed overseas, she was sexually assaulted. As a result, Teresa suffered substance abuse problems, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Teresa found herself homeless, until Volunteers of America stepped in. Teresa moved into safe housing with fellow female veterans. She now receives counseling to improve her coping mechanisms, as well as help with housing paperwork. She finally feels safe and able to achieve her dream of being self-sufficient thanks to Volunteers of America.
Kevin
A few months after the 9/11 attacks, 24-year-old Kevin enlisted in the Navy. Through high school, Kevin was a disciplined runner and worked food service and retail jobs. Kevin returned to food service after his time with the Navy, but found it difficult to get ahead while making only minimum wage. After his apartment was robbed, Kevin found himself homeless. With the help of Volunteers of America, Kevin is now in a residential program that is allowing him to save, as well as receiving budgeting and education assistance.
