9/11 events in Columbus, Ohio

Help commemorate September 11 with these volunteer opportunities.

On September 11, 2001, American history changed forever. To honor the 3,000 lives that were lost that day, as well as the heroes who have answered their nation’s call to protect us, Ohio celebrates Patriot Day.

In remembrance, Volunteers of America of Greater Ohio will hold celebrations with residents of all of our veterans programs. We are also hosting a landscaping volunteer project on the last day of Columbus Volunteer Challenge as part of the National Day of Service, in partnership with United Way and HandsOn Central Ohio, at our Columbus Veterans Resource Center on 9/11.

If you’d like to get involved with National Day of Service, check out these events:

  • Assemble care packages for deployed troops. HandsOn Central Ohio has adopted a Recovery Center in Afghanistan that helps injured Service Members. The Recovery Center has asked for specific items that we will be putting together to show our gratitude for our soldiers' service.
  • Flag straightening on the Statehouse lawn. Help straighten 2,999 small flags (each one represents a life lost on 9.11.01) on the West side of the Ohio Statehouse.
  • 9/11 Meals-On-Wheels Delivery. Using your own vehicle, deliver 12 to 15 hot, nutritious meals to older adults and the chronically ill residents in your community.  Routes take about 1.5 hours to deliver. Training and directions will be provided.
